City rallies citizens to show colors
BAGUIO CITY – the city government here is encouraging residents here specially businessmen to display the Philippine flag within their establishments come May 28 to June 12.
City Mayor Mauricio Domogan requested the display of the flag in celebration of the National Flag Day on May 28 and Independence Day on June 12.
Domogan said, ‘displaying the flag is a way of renewing the spirit of nationalism, patriotism and the love for freedom’.
Republic Act No. 8491 section 26 declares May 28 to June 12 of each year as ‘Flag Days’ during which period all offices, agencies and instrumentalities of government, business establishments, institutions of learning and private homes are enjoined to display the flag.
This period commemorates the ‘Battle of Alapan’ in May 28, 1898 when the national flag was first unfurled in Imus, Cavite by General Emilio Aguinaldo and culminates on June 12 or 15 days afterwards when the Philippine Flag was waved in full view of the world following the formal proclamation of independence in Kawit, Cavite.
However, it shall be prohibited under the same act to display the flag in discotheques, cockpits, night and day clubs, casinos, gambling joints and places of vice or where frivolity prevails. ***paul rillorta
