Best garden winners awarded

Five home vegetable gardeners will be recognized this Monday during the flag raising ceremonies at city hall.

According to Nutrition Officer Angelita Sabado, Teresa Penigneo of Irisan, Jane Paulyn Abanag of Lucnab, Amelia Montes of Pinget, Johnny Balabag of Poliwes and Soledad Umali of SLU-SVP, ranked first to fifth best, respectively from all the participants.

Launched by the health services office, the garden contest was maintained by individuals in the community for food security, provision of fresh vegetable on the dining table, and physical exercise for the gardeners.

The adjudged gardens were plots, pots vertical and rooftop garden with a minimum of five varieties of vegetables and edible herbs. They may be located in barangay halls, household backyard, empty lots or land owned by governments.

Pictures were taken of the development of the garden during the three- month period, with pre-judging done in July, and final judging in August.

According to Coordinator Myrna Holanio, the goals and focus on activities with positive outcomes include beautification, reduced vandalism, littering and crime, food security, environmental improvement, economic benefits and improved health.

National awardee for urban gardening Danilo Agliam will be presented a certificate for promoting, sustaining and sharing technical knowledge on urban gardening to similarly interested individuals in the city. -juliegfianza
