Baguio Arnisadores takes over PNG

DUMAGUETE CITY – the unrelenting Arnisadores of Baguio proved their worth in bagging the over-all crown in Arnis Anyo and Labanan for the second POC-PSC National games here.

First to draw blood for team Baguio is Elmer Batani where he dominated Arnis Anyo-Solo baston category at the Casco Gymnasium right in the center of the city which started May 26.

Batani, a second year college student of the University of Baguio proudly showed-off his form wearing only the wanes impressing ten judges which gave him the highest score attainable.

Batani along with Hernan Galiling and Raymart Guttierez went on to dominate Spada Y Daga -team anyo adding another gold for Baguio in the first day of the matches.

The trio also got silver in doble baston-team event and another silver for Gutierrez in the 60-65 kgs. Labanan and bronze medal for Galiling in the 55-60 kgs. Category.

Guttierez also got 2 silver medals in Anyo doble baston and Spada Y Daga.

For the girls category, Claire Donga-as of the University of Baguio showed finesse in Spada Y Daga-Solo Anyo where she won gold and later on moved to Team Anyo-Solo Baston and Spada Y Daga with University of the Cordilleras Rosela Alvarez and schoolmate Hanna Gammong for another gold.

The trio settled for silver in Anyo doble baston team Category.

Donga-as later on landed silver in Anyo doble baston and bronze in Anyo solo baston against University of Makati and Cebu.

In Arnis-Labanan, Henry Gando of Saint Louis University (SLU) earned gold in the 3rd day of the fight for the 51 kgs. and below category while fellow Louisian Christopher De Leon dominated the 65-70 kgs. category.

University of the Cordilleras Alvin Abalos also proved his worth to fight the power houses of Ilo-ilo and University of Makati(UMAK) in the 60-65 kgs. Category where he grabbed gold in the final matches.

Adding to the gold haul for Baguio are Rene Ilonen of UB (70-75 kgs) and Andre Dean Foman-eg also of UB (80-85 kgs.).

Meantime, the girls division in Arnis Labanan was equally exciting as University of Baguio’s Claire Donga-as literally dropped her opponent to her knees in the 51-55 kgs. Category bringing home the gold.

It was later on followed by the raw power of University of the Cordilleras Rosela Alvarez in the 55-60 kgs. chipping another gold for the team.

Other team players who contributed a silver medal for Baguio are; Manly Bayona (UC) for the 65-70 kgs. Labanan, Dhale Sudicalan (47 kgs. And below) and Rodini Buyucan (70-75 kgs.).

University of the Cordilleras Jhun Balutoc settled for bronze in the 51-55 kgs. Category in Labanan.

University of Baguio Coach Ceasar Badicao said, ‘the athletes everyday high altitude training has been beneficial to the team which resulted in the over-all medal haul’.

‘Mahirap kasi pag ganitong national event, marami din ang malakas lalo na sa Ilo-ilo at Makati’, he said.

The team brought home a total of 12 golds, 10 silver and 4 bronze medals in Arnis and was declared over-all champions garnering the highest total score. ***paul rillorta
