BAGUIO CITY –The city council on Monday approved a resolution mourning the demise of sportsman Simeon “Sammy” Ayochok who died in China last July 16 at the age of 56.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan last Wednesday expressed his sympathies to Ayochok’s survivors and assured that the city will continue to help coordinate with the Chinese authorities the repatriation of the late muscleman’s remains here.
“The prestige and honor he has given to the City, the Cordilleras and the country is remarkable and has been a source of motivation to his fellow athletes, and also of other young bodybuilding athletes who are still taking their first steps in the bodybuilding industry,” the resolution noted.
“His fame and contribution would be truly unforgettable and shall remain as one of the foundations in the sports industry in the City of Baguio and in the Cordilleras, particularly in the bodybuilding field.”
In the resolution, the city remembers Ayochok thus:
“The late Simeon “Sammy” Domingo Ayochok was from Central Bontoc, Mountain Province, who pursued his tertiary education at the University of Baguio;
“At 19 years old, he tried weightlifting and caught the eye of the late city councilor and bodybuilder Nick F. Domalsin Sr. who later on encouraged him to participate in tournaments;
“He has been regarded as the pride of the highland Igorots in bodybuilding as he was able to bag national and international awards from various prestigious bodybuilding tournaments;
“His fame started way back in 1975 when he won the gold medal in the National Bodybuilding Championship Junior Division and was soon followed by two or more back to back championship titles in 1976 and 1977;
“In 1977, his international fame started as he bagged the gold medal in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Bodybuilding Championship, which was later on followed by another gold medal in 1986;
“He also won gold medals in the Asian Bodybuilding Championship twice in Taiwan and Malacca, Malaysia;
“His constant achievement in bagging gold medals bringing prestige to his country went on as he was once again able to bag another gold medal during the 1986 Taipei Asian Bodybuilding Championship, another gold medal in 1987 in Malaysia and in Singapore in 1988;
“He likewise won another gold medal in the 1987 Jakarta Indonesian Southeast Asian Games (SEAG);
“In 1987, he finished only as third in the World Bodybuilding Championship in Madrid, Spain, and later on had a comeback victory for another gold medal in 1994 in Hongkong during the Asian Pro Bodybuilding Championships, and also another gold medal in the Oceania Open Bodybuilding Championship in Melbourne, Australia in 1997;
“He almost made it as “He-Man, Master of the Universe”, as he placed third twice in the Mr. Universe contests in Madrid in 1987 and in Shanghai in 1994, and placed third in the Mr. World Title in Athens, Greece and placed seventh in the Professional Universe Championship in England;
“Apart from his achievement in bodybuilding, he also worked in various bodybuilding outfits in Hongkong, and also established his own in the City of Baguio, the Asia Fitness and Rehabilitation Center located at Brookside, Baguio City;
