Baguio retains PNG Crown

DUMAGUETE CITY – the 100 plus strong Baguio delegation made waves in the city of ‘gentle people’ during the last days of the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) National Games here.

During the close of the POC-PSC National Games June 3, the delegation was able to accumulate 78 golds, 74 silver and 52 bronze medals in different events, the highest so far in PNG history.

The Arnisadores bagged a total of 12 golds, 10 silver and 4 bronze medals and was declared over-all team champion.

The solid performances in Anyo and the warrior like spirit of the athletes proved essential in attaining victory over the best players they have encountered.

In the close of the athletics Thursday, Team Baguio again dominated the track and field oval bagging a total of 17 golds, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals.

In Wushu, Team Baguio bagged the highest medal haul of 33 golds, 24 silver and 16 bronze medals while in Judo, pitted against the countries Philippine National Team, the Judokas were able to earn 5 golds, 7 silver and 12 bronze medals.

The Lone swimmer Jenkins Lorenzo Labao was able to grab 6 golds and 1 silver.
Jack Suldayan, the lone Pencak Silat player was able to enter the semi-final round however, due to a .2 weight gain in the 60 kgs category, he was disqualified.

He then shifted to freestyle wrestling where he earned a bronze medal.

The Baguio wrestling team bagged a total of 5 golds, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals where they topped the event beating Team Dumaguete who landed in 2nd and Zamboanga in 3rd.

Delegation Head and OIC City Sports Development Officer Gaudencio Gonzales said, ‘the latest medal haul could have been higher if all events in the PNG were represented’.

It can be recalled that the city government released more than one million pesos for the delegation to cover transportation, food and other expenses.

‘How I wish there was more funds, we could have brought more athletes to represent the city, but it’s already a very good success rate,’ He said.

Meantime, Mayor Mauricio Domogan applauded the athletes during last Mondays flag raising ceremony and has assured them of the early release of their cash incentives in bringing pride and honor to the city. ***paul rillorta
